The future of Linchpin and Confluence
Linchpin is getting ready to be comaptible with Confluence 9. The graphic shows the Linchpin logo and a Confluence logo, connected by a heart that looks like two puzzle pieces.

Confluence updates bring improvements like security fixes and new features (e.g., dark mode in Confluence 9).

However, they also introduce major architectural changes to the core that break compatibility with older versions. Apps like Linchpin must adopt new APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and bundle several libraries previously provided by Confluence 7, 8 and 9. As such, new Confluence versions make updates incompatible with previous versions.

Thus, it’s necessary to customize our Linchpin apps in depth – on which we are already working.

To address this, we’re offering three Linchpin release paths (for Confluence 10, 9 & 8), while also ensuring compatibility, enabling future-proof improvements, and following industry best practices.

But don’t worry – regarding the user interface, user experience and also feature set prior to the Confluence 9-compatible version – the versions will be identical. The changes are only of technical nature. If technically feasible, we’ll continue delivering new features for both Confluence 8.x and 9.x versions.

Three Versions of Your Intranet

Each Linchpin app comes in 3 versions: One version will be compatible with Confluence 10, one with Confluence 9, while the other version is compatible with Confluence up to version 8.x.

How Do I Find Out Which Version I Need for Confluence 10, 9 or 8?

Linchpin apps that are compatible either with Confluence 10 or 9 will receive an upgrade. Your Confluence UPM should automatically offer the right version to update to, so that you don’t have to worry about looking for it manually. However, to avoid confusion, we will still provide you with a version comparison on this page.

Our Recommendation

We recommend for you to upgrade now since Atlassian has released Confluence 10.2 (Long Term Support version). Switching to an LTS version of Confluence allows you to stay secure for a long while and regain the ability to enjoy new Linchpin features without worries.

Overview of All Version Changes
For Confluence 8, 9 & 10

Version for Confluence 10 and above: Contains all important security updates & bug fixes (more info here) as well as sponsored development.

Version for Confluence 9: Contains all important security updates & bug fixes (more info here) as well as sponsored development.

Version for Confluence 8 and below: Contains all important security updates & bug fixes (more info here) as well as sponsored development, if technically feasible.

With the Confluence 9-comaptible Linchpin release, the very first number in a version number changes. For example: From Linchpin Suite 5.10.2 to Linchpin Suite 6.0
Upgrading from a Confluence 8-compatible version to a Confluence 9-compatible version WITHOUT using Confluence 9 might lead to bugs or data loss! However, your Confluence UPM should automatically update to the right version for you.

Please Note!

From now on, you will have to choose the Linchpin version that supports your version of Confluence.

Updating from a non–Confluence 10 compatible Linchpin to a Confluence 10 compatible version while still on Confluence 9.x or older can cause bugs, performance issues, or data loss.

Basically, each Confluence version comes with its own major version of Linchpin.

Please make sure you have the correct version.

From now on, you will have to choose the Linchpin version that supports your version of Confluence.

Updating your Linchpin app from a non-Confluence 9 compatible version to a Confluence 9 compatible version while you are on Confluence 8.x or older may result in bugs, performance issues and/or data loss. Please make sure you have the correct version.

But don’t worry, we’ve decided to package the Confluence 9 compatibility release into a separate major release to give you the best possible user experience and make it easier to choose the right app.

 

Let’s use Linchpin Intranet Suite as an example:

You are using Linchpin 5.10.2 on Confluence 8 or older ➔ You want to remain on Confluence 8 or older ➔ You need a Linchpin Intranet Suite 5.11

You are using Linchpin 5.10.2 on Confluence 8 or older ➔ You update your Confluence to 9.0 or newer ➔ You need Linchpin Intranet Suite 6.0

No, the update to Suite 7.0 requires Confluence 10.

Will I Still Get New Features If I Don’t Update to Confluence 10?

We will develop new features for Confluence 10 and up. If technically possible, we’ll also provide them for Confluence 9.x and 8.x.
